My husband, Don, and I live in Brea, CA but we also spend time in Bend, OR.  We have four children and ten grandchildren.  I have taught school but was mostly involved in politics--which is still a passion--as a  school board member, city councilwoman and state assemblywoman.  I also served as the Director of the CA Department of Aging.  Currently I enjoy serving on a foundation board and a non-profit board, both of which support older adults living in the community. I'm very excited about seeing everybody again!  My wife, Darcy, and I have been living in Arlington, VA, since the 70's, where we raised two wonderful kids.  Darcy (Elliott) was in the Whitman class of 1968. We met in 1973, while working at the Sir Walter Raleigh Inn Restaurant in Bethesda during grad school.  I am retired, at least temporarily, from a career in systems consulting and management, and Darcy is in her last couple years of teaching at the neighborhood elementary school.  Both of our children, their respective spouses and children live in the suburbs of Atlanta, so we are feeling the tug to move south. Darcy has agreed to accompany me to the reunion.  Can't wait. Gordon Send Gordon a MessageSend Gordon a Message

My thanks to the organizers and especially the one-third of you who chose to add something beyond occupation, marital status and number of children.  It’s been fun reading and reminiscing about both those I knew and those I didn’t.

In that spirit, after graduation and college I joined the military.  In an effort to be different from the thousands of other returning vets, I went to Ohio State where I earned a Masters and PhD.  Returning to D.C., I worked for the Justice Department for five years and the State Department for 20.  From drug policy advisor to oceans/environment/science and democracy/human rights/labor, it was all good.  Great jobs, solid people.

I retired from both civil and military service on January 1, 1999, moving to Florida to take care of aging parents and enjoy the rest of my time, just in case there weren’t as many days left as we’d like to believe!  Since then it’s been a constant beat of banging drums and smelling flowers.  On drums we have leadership roles with DAV, Xavier’s alumni association, a local lifelong learning program, various city advisory boards and most time consuming -- numerous church organizations working for social justice.  The flowers include a return to tennis and doubles with my son, who is much better than I ever was; international travel; and trips to visit and/or care for our three children and nine grandchildren -- three per.  Through it all I’ve been gifted with a spouse of 45 years, for which the credit is almost all hers.

For anyone who cared to read this far, I wish you good health and a return to your profile so that I can sip some single malt and read how life has treated you!  Enjoy the journey....

After finishing at Virginia Tech, marrying Shannon from nearby Radford College, and time in the Air Force (Texas, Thailand, Hawaii), landed in California in 1974.  Suited us well so we never left.  Went to work for Pfizer, picked an MS in Finance. Eventually retired from Allergan, a niche eyecare company pleasantly overwhelmed by the success of Botox.  Shannon and I live in San Clemente, but our two daughters and their families live in the South (Birmingham and Memphis) so we spend quite a bit of time there.  Still surfing.

After 2 years in a wonderful accelerated, academically challenging jr high, my folks moved to Montgomery Co where I was plunked into a middle of the road 10th grade skeptical of my readiness for high school.  I was miserable.  Happily, the family moved to Bethesda in the summer and I started 11th grade at Whitman.  Before the end of the first marking period, I had discovered RL and AP classes, and teachers like Mr Schneider, Mrs vonDoenhoff, Mrs Diamond, Mrs Croft and Mme Trotter.   I was in the right place again.
1968 was a huge year...we got married, my husband shipped out, I graduated from Maryland, I had our first baby.  Whew.   Then I started to teach in PG co.   David came home after almost 2 years.   We had 2 more children.  In 1978 we moved to Michigan.
So much has happened in 50 years!   Hoping for the travel ok from my docs so we can be there in May.

Life’s chapters:    …married at 19…raised two awesome sons…returned to college…changed partners and embraced two great stepsons…finished school and got a job…became a Californian…fell in love with six magical granddaughters… Where did that half-century go?  It’ll be a delight to catch up with WWHS friends!

After graduating from The Citadel with a civil engineering degree and a commission as a 2nd Lt., a 3 year stint in the Army including building roads in Vietnam, then several more years enjoying life in Hawaii, I finally returned to the east coast and have spent the last 30 years in the construction industry working in the Washington/Baltimore area.  After retiring in 2010, my wife and I built our retirement house in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  Life is good! It is a good, healthy,  full life.  College at Tufts, taught school in NY, MI and IL over a 7 year span.  Went to grad school at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, receiving PhD in 1979.  Had exhilerating career as adjunct professor and consultant with major corporations advising on issues of leadership, stratagy, culture and change.  Married too many times but finally married my grad school prof.  We have been together for 40 years, have a son and daughter, a son in law and 3 grand daughters.  We have retired to Santa Fe, New Mexico (from Chicago) where we do community social justice work, hike and enjoy life immensely.  I sit on a few Boards; philanthropic and corporate. We travel.  We count our blessings.

A. Andrea [Andy] O'Neill (Hallock)
retired landscape designer, horticult. Married 3 yes
After a great year at Goucher, I transfered to Md U for degree in landscape design and horticulture {heavy in history!}.  Peter and I enjoyed 2 valuable years with Gustin Gardens and then Pete's family farm {outside of Charlottesville, Va} called us  to Keswick.  We opened a garden center, The Garden Spot Inc.  Shortly a landscape firm, a tree nursery, Instashade, 3 children and a flock of sheep kept us occupied.
We sold the enterprises 10 yrs ago due to Peter's health {now much improved}.  We enjoy a family compound, 4 grandchildren, and continue to be involved with conservation issues and community concerns.  I remain so appreciative of the academic freedom Whitman gave us, as well as teachers such as  Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Schneider, the language dept, etc.  Classmates and good friends come to mind - so good to hear from Shashi and Bernd!  Hope to see many in May.  Many, many thanks to the organizers!

I have always considered the two years at Walt Whitman to be among the best of times.  Standouts still are the camaraderie we had, the spontaneity we had and the teachers we had.  And, we witnessed and experienced some simply remarkable 20th century historical events.

After high school I attended college and law school in the Boston area and have stayed there.  During the bulk of my working years I was a consultant, and traveled extensively all over the U. S., frequently to England and sometimes to continental Europe.  That was always interesting and fun—and tiring.

The crown jewels of my life are named Victoria and Isabella—my daughters.  They provide us great pride and joy on a daily basis.  They have done their jobs--well--by outdoing their parents (already!).

Cheers, everyone!

Such wonderful memories of Walt Whitman!  On graduation my parents retired to live and sail on board their boat in Florida, the Islands, eventually landing in St. Lucia, WI. Have enjoyed a wonderful life with my husband, Jim Howard.  We married in Nassau, Bahamas, and settled in Cambridge, MA.  Worked with international hotel management training and development which afforded a rich traveling experience, and established our own company.  We moved to enjoy the New England country life in New Hampshire. Since retiring our business, we divide our time between Santa Fe, NM and Peterborough, NH.  Still love traveling, volunteering, enjoying friends and family in NH, and exploring the wonders of the Southwest.  Send Peggy a MessageSend Peggy a Message
